To Catch a Pirate by Jade Parker was a book I picked up from the library while looking for something fluffy and diverting.
Annalisa Townsend and her father are off to start a new life but when their ship is attacked by pirates it seems fate has other plans. Although Annalisa attempts to hide in the hold but she is discovered by one of the pirate crew, James Sterling. She convinces him to accept a kiss rather than her mother’s necklace and disappears. All of Baby, Nose to Toes by Victoria Adler, illustrated by Hiroe Nakata, is one of our current favourites. We don’t yet own a copy but we’ve taken this one out from the library a few times now.
I like it because:
It’s repetitive. The phrase “Me! I do.” is repeated frequently.
A great way to learn body part vocabulary.
Nice way to help understand questions – “Who loves baby’s ___?” is repeated again and again.
Rhyming! (EXCEPT for the tummy page which randomly DOESN’T follow the rhyme scheme of the rest of the book. That drives me a little bit crazy and admittedly I creatively add in an extra word so that it does rhyme).
We use this book as an opportunity to reinforce those boy part words by kissing or tickling them as we get to the corresponding pages. It makes reading extra fun!
Oink, Moo, Meow was my son’s first favourite book.
This board book features various animals and their sounds (for example, the Cow says Moo…). The animals all float on white pages, one per page and there are 26 animals in total. I have no idea why he loves it so much, but it seems to be a favourite among other babies I know! The Say & Play series by Sterling Publishing includes this one, as well as Numbers, Colors, Things That Go and a few others. I love the simple and bright pictures (all stock photos it seems). They’re great for learning concepts and vocabulary!
Do you ever start a book excited about it’s potential and realize part-way through that it’s just not doing it for you? I always used to push myself to finish it, but lately I’ve had several books that I just wasn’t feeling and I allowed myself to just put down. Some I may go back and read another time, some I have no intention of trying ever again. Here’s my list of recent DNFs (in no particular order): Continue reading →
Many apologies! I have completely dropped the ball on blogging, and fear that I have fallen off the regular posting bandwagon completely. I guess it was inevitable at some point, but between the voracious reading of baby-related books (which I’ve decided NOT to post reviews of) and being sick/tired/super busy, it is hopeless to get regular reading done. (I am feeling MUCH better now that I’m in the second trimester, but the discomforts of getting larger are peeking out at me – like having sore hips, an achy back, heartburn, and decreased mobility). There is much baby prep to do and so little time!
So, from now on I shall post as much as I can, but it will not be on a regular basis at all.
I’m back! Sorry for the hiatus – I was very glad for my break which ended up being longer than I anticipated but much needed.
I can finally reveal the reason I felt the need for a hiatus – and explain that I HAVE been reading (a bit), just not books that I wanted to post about.
If you can’t read any of the titles, perhaps this makes things clearer:
Yes! We’re expecting a brand-new addition to our little family! I’ve been so impatient to share the news!
Our new arrival is expected in early March, 2015.
So it might make sense when I explain that I haven’t been reaching much fiction because:
Pregnancy sickness – it’s a thing. It’s been a longer-lasting-than-anticipated thing which has made me lethargic and less able to concentrate than normal.
I’ve been reading mostly pregnancy and baby-related books – for obvious reasons.
I was EXHAUSTED the first three months – and going to bed at abnormally ridiculously early hours. I’m gaining energy finally, and have only recently found I have both the energy AND the brain power to devote to books.
Since this is a big life change that has ALREADY impacted my blogging, I am unfortunately going to switch to a once-a-week schedule and see how that goes.
I meant to post this earlier, but I am on holidays this week and mean to have a holiday from blogging as well. I have no posts stored up as I haven’t been reading as much in recent weeks due to life circumstances!
I’ll be back in September, and in the meantime Happy Reading!
